Dark Souls 2: Monsters Rundown - Cyclops (Ogres)

Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. My names Cobalt Blue and some of you may know me or my Dark Souls 2 Rundown series, the first completed section being the Bonfire Consumables. However, today I'm going to leave the safety of the Bonfire along with you guys and we're going to head into the hostile lands of Drangleic to hunt down some of the most dangerous and bloodthirsty creatures to stalk this territories. Welcome to My Dark Souls 2: Monster Rundown and today we'll be taking a look at the hulking masses of flab that are, the Cyclops (also known as Ogres).

Drangleic is a place where creatures of all sizes roam and one of the largest, at the very least fattest, enemies you'll first encounter is the Cyclops. They tower above a normal men at around five or six meters tall with pale white, almost greenish in appearance, fleshy skin covering their flabby body. Don't be fooled though as their large size does not slow them down and when disturbed or provoked, they lash out with sharp claws and strikes powerful enough to knock over even the strongest knights. The name Cyclops originates from the fact that they posses a single eye located above their mouth and would be the target for those that use decide to use range to bring one of these hulking beasts down. They're are very few, if any, features that would distinguish two Cyclops from one another as they tend too look the same and this could be due to the areas and diet.

These enemies are mainly found in dark areas where there is very little light with a much lower temperature, due to such little light there is, and attempt to eat anyone and anything that comes close to it. We know that there are much more dangerous predators that stalk the land so smaller animals would use caves and other hiding spots to shelter themselves, which would result in an encounter with a Cyclops. When you put all these facts together, this could explain their pale white skin, due to lack of sun, and large amounts of insulating fat stored up inside their bodies, from feasting on smaller creatures like Cobalts and undead travelers who have either hollowed out or went down the wrong tunnel.

It is best to avoid these carnivorous beasts but if you find yourself locked into combat with one, there are several tactics that can be deployed in order to reduce risks. Unless you want a bit of risk. As they say, the bigger the risk; the bigger the reward.

For those that are new to combat and wish to sustain as little damage as possible, it's best to turn to the usage of range through a bow, or crossbow, or magic. If you have a bow or crossbows on hand, make sure you have enough arrows or bolts and aim for their eye in order to achieve the most damage. Though they are fast, they shouldn't be able to come into range of you as long as you keep backing off whenever they come closer and taking pot shots every opportunity you get. This also applies to magic but due to the inability to aim your spells, it's best to just fire at any section of the best and back off whenever it comes close.

For those that want a bit more fun and excitement, and have the experience for it, I would suggest using a melee weapon. Fast hitting blades, such as daggers, katanas, short swords and rapiers will allow the most hit in the shortest amount of time. Be careful though as you may run out of breath too quickly and unable to dodge any incoming counter attacks the Cyclops will dish out. You can also use slower, but Harding hitting, weapons like greatswords, ultra greatswords, hammers and large axes to stagger the beast. However, just like the fast hitting weapons, you need to be weary of your stamina usage. Keep in mind as well that larger weapons tend to swing slower then smaller ones and have a longer recovery time before being able to swing again. Like I said above, it's weight does not make it slow so during a swing or the recovery time you may find yourself between a rock and two hundred and fifty pounds of pure death. Finally, the up close and personal method does require one of two things, or both if you prefer, and they are a sturdy shield, or the reactions to roll. Using a shield is the best option for those that aren't very experienced in rolling yet as it could save you from a very sticky situation. However, it does take a hit on your stamina and if your guard is broken by a powerful enough swing then wave bye bye to your humanity. The other option though is rolling and this is a pretty advance technique the trick is to roll at the very last second before the Cyclops fist makes impact with your face in order to completely avoid all damage. Bad timing or one bad roll though and it's game over.

If you're unable to wield a range weapon and do not wish to go man to beast, it is a good idea to find a trader selling ranged ranged weapons as there is an abundant amount that can be bought; ranging from throwing knives to holy water to fire bombs to magical firebombs. The tactic to using these is pretty simple; lock on, throw item, back off, throw item and block or roll when you need to. The two best thing about using throwing items is the good amount of damage it does and it's usage does not consume any stamina, unlike weapon attacks or spells.

Knowing what you're capable off is only half the battle as knowing what your opponent is capable off is vital to victory. A Cyclops may be large and fat but don't be fooled as his speed and reaction can catch you off guard. When there's prey close by, the one eyed beast will try to swipe at it with large hands equipped with powerful claws at the end. If one of these swipes hit you, then be ready for a world of hurt as it will try to follow this up with another hit from its other hand and a finishing move that could result in you being crushed or flung away. There's also a chance that it will lunge at you with both hands spread open, mouth salivating intensely in an attempt to stuff you between powerful teeth in order to satisfy its hunger. If you approach a Cyclops from its side, then make sure to stay on your toes as it could swing at you with a powerful uppercut. Finally, if your tactic is to stay behind it and strike at its blind spot then do keep it mind that it will try to sit on you if you stay too close.

However you choose to face such a beast is up to you. There are more questions on this brute but I'll leave that up to you to find out. Happy hunting readers. This is Cobalt Blue, signing out. I'll catch you guys next time.
