Dark Souls 2: Bonfire Consumables Rundown - Bonfire Ascetic

Hey guys, Cobalt Blue here and today I'm feeling a little bit more informative so rather then write an article with a thousand words that explains nothing, I'll be telling you guys about one of Dark Souls 2's newest features that revolves around using the Bonfire to affect your gameplay and the world you'll be exploring. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, Dark Souls 2 presents us with a brand new feature that allows players to burn three particular items whenever resting at any Bonfire.

Bonfire Ascetic

What is it and what does it do?
The first item I'll be talking about is known as Bonfire Ascetic and when set ablaze, it increase the difficulty of enemies within the area of that Bonfire. However, this isn't as simple as it seems due to the fact that these tougher opponents you'll now have to deal with are the same as the ones found within the next playthrough level.

For instance, if you burn this item while going through your first playthrough, known as New Game, all enemies within that area will now be the ones from New Game+. If you're going through New Game+ then they'll become enemies from New Game++ and so on.

When deciding on whether or not to go through with this process, just remember that it is irreversible and will persist on following playthroughs. Meaning that by going into New Game+ after completing the main quest line, the enemies from the area where you burned the Bonfire Ascetic will be in there New Game++ mode.

Is it really worth the risk?
There are positives to burning Bonfire Ascetic so it's not all doom and gloom. A feature that was changed in Dark Souls 2 from Dark Souls is the enemy respawn and how it now works. After killing foes from a certain area over and over again, they will stop spawning due to limited amount of respawns that they now possess. This means that farming items and souls from one area before going and steamrolling the boss is now much more difficult then it once was and people will have to adapt and find out different paths to progress. Although, this is where this new both dangerous and marvelous item comes into play. As well as increasing the difficulty of the enemies to the next playthrough level, it will also reset the amount of respawns available back to the original amount. This means that you will be able to keep farming enemies within the area a few more times for souls and drops before they become extinct once again. Speaking of drops, by advancing the area to the next plathrough difficulty, it is possible to acquire items and drops that are only available in New Game+. This is one of the newest feature to be added in order to keep players playing for much longer and increase the lifespan of Dark Souls 2. More interesting loot that can reveal more about the lore of this world and have different effects as well as usage can never be a bad thing.

What else to keep in mind?
So before being able to make the decision of whether or not to set such an item ablaze or to keep it tucked safely away for the sole purpose of just possessing it, you will have to beat the boss of the area in order to manipulate the bonfires within his domain. Once they start burning, you are able to throw more into that one bonfire. The difficulty of the areas can be seen at the top right hand corner of the screen when browsing through the different places to travel to. It is represented in Bonfire intensity by the different numbers with 1 being the lowest difficulty and every number following it (e.g. 2, 3, 4, etc) meaning that there's been an increase in difficulty.

Bonfire Ascetic can be chosen as the start as one of the starting gifts. Other ways of acquiring it are by purchasing it within game from certain traders and looting it from certain enemies found in some parts of the world. (However, more information will need to be found out and updated in the future)

That's all for now
I hope you guys found this information interesting and potentially useful for you're on playthroughs. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for my other mini-guides that will go into detail about how the other bonfire consumables work. I'll be producing articles that also explain other aspects of the game so be sure to check them out when you have a moment to spare. Thanks for reading and I'll catch you guys next time.
